Museums on a Budget: Technology

From working in smaller museums for years, I've learned that one always has to be creative in making a tiny budget stretch. Today I discovered an interesting way for museums to incorporate technology at no cost!

If you've noticed recently, companies and businesses have started using barcodes that are able to be scanned by smart phones that link to webpages, etc. I learned that you can create these QR (quick response) codes for free on websites like BeeTagg. All you have to do, if you wanted to link to a webpage, is copy and paste it into the static link page and in seconds a code is created.

These codes could be useful if you had an exhibit and wanted to allow visitors to link up to podcasts or music or a video on a particular subject. They could also be advantageous on posters or advertisements for your museum or exhibit to link up to your museum's webpage or for further information.

The upside: It allows for your museum to incorporate technology into exhibits or advertising basically for free.

The downside: Not everyone has a smart phone or a phone with capabilities to scan and link to these codes.

Since these new QR codes are an up-and-coming thing, it would be wise for your museum to incorporate these codes as soon as possible!

If you have smart phone capabilities (and have downloaded the free scanning app), scan the code for my blog!
